I leave for Japan next month! I’m so excited to visit, as this will be my first time. Whenever I visit a new country, I try to read books that force me to tap deeper into the culture. This month, I’m adding Japanese authors to my reading list as I’ll soon visit Tokyo.
Also, if you’re interested in exploring the bookish world across the Asian diaspora, I recently visited Seoul, South Korea. Here’s a recap of all the bookish travel I did in Seoul.
The Devil’s Flute Murders, by Seishi Yokomizo
GoodReads Rating: 3.93/5
It’s October, which means it’s spooky season. Naturally I found something that would get me excited for Halloween while also prepping for the trip abroad. Yokomizo channels Agatha Christie in this murder mystery who-done-it. A once-noble family is mourning the loss of their brooding, troubled patriarch. As they gather to conjure the spirit of the departed, they are visited by a ghost who brings death upon the house once more.
What You Are Looking For Is in the Library, by Michiko Aoyama
GoodReads Rating: 4.11/5
This is a summoning for fans of The Midnight Library and Before the Coffee Gets Cold. Sayuri is Tokyo’s most beloved and knowledgeable librarian. Why? Not only has she read every book on her shelves, but she can also look into a reader’s soul and provide them the perfect book recommendation based on what they’re after in life. If you’re currently feeling stuck in your job, relationship, or life, maybe you too should sit down with Sayuri for some clarity!
