Frieze New York Returns with Standout Solo Presentations and Curated Stands from the World’s Leading Galleries Alongside Artist-led Programming and Activations

Today, Frieze revealed the full line up of highlights at Frieze New York, running May 1 – 5, 2024. Led for the third year by Christine Messineo (Director of Americas, Frieze), the fair will once again see a strong showing of solo presentations and curated stands from over 60 leading galleries, collectively providing a snapshot of global art practice today. Alongside the booths, the fair will debut a new initiative with Stone Island, introducing fair staff uniforms which take inspiration from a painting by Focus artist Hasani Sahlehe. In addition, Frieze partners with defining arts organizations High Line Art, Performance Space, Artists Space, Art Production Fund and Rockefeller Center to celebrate performance art both at The Shed and across the city. Frieze New York is supported by global lead partner Deutsche Bank, continuing over two decades of a shared commitment to artistic excellence.

Christine Messineo (Director of Americas, Frieze) said: “We look forward to welcoming artists, collectors, institutions and art enthusiasts to The Shed for what will be another memorable Frieze New York. Surveying our participating galleries, I’m struck by how they excite, challenge and prompt reflection. The presentations are complemented by artist-led programming in collaboration with celebrated non-profits. Frieze New York reflects the vibrancy and depth of cultural engagement in New York, the proud capital of the international art world.”

SOLO, DUAL AND THEMED PRESENTATIONS FROM ACROSS THE GLOB

In keeping with tradition, the fair sees strong local representation with 38 participants operating a space in the city, while exhibitors spanning 25 countries will bring wide-ranging international perspectives to New York. This year will see longtime Focus exhibitors Château Shatto and Instituto de Visión graduate to the Galleries section and, across the two sections, feature notable participation from self-taught artists at Andrew Edlin Gallery, Mitre Galeria, Gordon Robichaux and Stevenson.

Frieze New York 2024 also benefits from a marked emphasis on solo presentations, including:

  • A solo show of new work by renowned painter Alex Katz, presented by Gladstone Gallery.
  • James Cohan’s display of new work by Elias Sime, currently featured at the 2024 Venice Biennale, who engages with both his immediate environment and Ethiopia’s rich artistic traditions.
  • A booth by Sylvie Fleury, jointly presented by Sprüth Magers and Karma International, wherein art, consumerism and life collide in media ranging from sculpture to video.
  • Large scale paintings and works on paper by Hiroshi Sugito, shown by Tomio Koyama Gallery.
  • A solo with Silverlens of shaped canvases by Filipino-American abstractionist Leo Valledor, who was a founding member of downtown Manhattan’s trailblazing Park Place Gallery.
  • Jenkins Johnson Gallery’s presentation of Dewey Crumpler, offering insight into the artist’s over 30-year exploration of historical subjugation and metaphors for Black oppression.
  • Kukje Gallery with the North American debut of Haegue Yang’s Mesmerizing Mesh series (2021–), consisting of investigations into traditional paper collages.
  • Paintings from the TURBINE series and collages from the DRFTRS series by Sterling Ruby, presented by Gagosian.
  • Gallery Hyundai with a booth dedicated to Seung-Taek Lee, recognized as a pioneer of the Korean avant-garde with his cardinal method of ‘non-sculpture,’ use of waste materials and sensitivity to environmental issues.
  • A solo presentation of work by Kaveri Raina, the first by the artist since joining Casey Kaplan, featuring abstract forms rendered from personal experience and inherited histories.

Alongside the solo presentations, participating galleries will show dual and themed presentations, highlights of which include:

  • A comprehensive look at Beverly Buchanan’s career, including her ’90s shack sculptures, ’80s works on paper and ’70s Abstract Expressionist paintings, in a dual presentation with revered self-taught artist Thornton Dial from Andrew Edlin Gallery.
  • Commonwealth and Council’s curated presentation by Suki Seokyeong Kang, Beatriz Cortez and Clarissa Tossin, who have all recently closed solo museum shows and share an interest in the enmeshment of craft traditions and modern technologies.
  • A dialogue between the works of Angolan artist Ana Silva and Brazilians Laura Lima and Vivian Caccuri, whose practices use textile supports, presented by A Gentil Carioca.
  • A multimedia group show from Stevenson featuring paintings from Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi’s Stadium series, photographs from Mame-Diarra Niang’s Sama Guent Guii series, and two sculptures by Bronwyn Katz.
  • Mendes Wood DM’s presentation addressing forms of change through growth, memory, abstraction and the sacred across the practices of Varda Caivano, Antonio Obá, Rosana Paulino and Pol Taburet.
  • A dual presentation featuring furniture and sculptures by Franz West and a range of works by Nate Lowman, both known for their playful aesthetic and radical approach to formal concerns, with David Zwirner.
  • Pace with a dual presentation by Robert Mangold and Arlene Shechet, coinciding with the
latter’s solo exhibit at Storm King Art Center.
  • Tina Kim Gallery’s group show including Pacita Abad, timed to coincide with her exhibition at MoMA PS1.

FOCUS

For 2024, Lumi Tan (Curator, Writer and Curatorial Director, Luna Luna) curates Frieze’s longstanding, much-beloved section of solo presentations by galleries at and under 12 years of age. Focus is supported by Stone Island, whose subsidies further aid young galleries’ participation in the fair. This edition of the fair also sees Stone Island debut a series of uniform shirts worn by Frieze staff, based on a work on display in Focus. Running for the next six editions of Frieze, the initiative extends Stone Island’s support of emerging artists at the fair. The first uniform will draw inspiration from Hasani Sahlehe’s Trying Green, a new acrylic painting demonstrating the Atlanta-based artist’s rhythmic abstraction, shown with Tif Sigfrids.

Among the highlight presentations in Focus are:

  • Kapp Kapp’s presentation of legendary New York photographer Stanley Stellar. The artist, who has traditionally shown black-and-white images, will for the first time show a group of ten technicolor images centering the queer community of New York City’s piers in the ’70s and ’80s.
  • A solo presentation by self-taught, multidisciplinary artist, activist and minister Reverend Joyce McDonald, in her hometown of New York, with Gordon Robichaux.
  • Paintings, drawings and objects by davi de jesus do nascimento, shown by Mitre Galeria,
reflecting the artist’s riverbank community along the São Francisco River.
  • Company Gallery with works by Leyla Faye composed of paint and found materials, featuring oversized automaton-like renditions of the artist engaging in various acrobatic rituals.

Maestro Dobel, the creator of the world’s first Cristalino, will return to Frieze New York with its smooth cocktails and Artpothecary experience: an innovative platform celebrating Mexico’s contemporary art and hospitality scene. Maestro Dobel will preview its latest ‘Grandes Maestros’ Toledo Edition in collaboration with Francisco ‘El Maestro’ Toledo, the legendary late Oaxacan artist. LG OLED will present six iconic works from the master of South Korean abstract art, Kim Whanki, reimagined by multimedia artists through advanced digital display technology. Reviving Whanki’s legacy in New York through the talents of today’s generation of artists exemplifies LG OLED’s commitment to merging the marvels of innovation and top-line artistic creativity to inspire the art we see around us today and tomorrow.

A special project by Sara Cwynar, presented by POIRET

Luxury beauty brand POIRET will debut their lounge at Frieze New York with a special project by Brooklyn-based artist Sara Cwynar, known for her practice enmeshing photography, video and collage. Exploring value and beauty when solidified in images, the project will include a new commission, Encyclopedia Grid, in which three AI-generated visuals are interspersed in an array of reproduced flower imagery. By challenging assumptions and examining the complexities of visual culture, both as a reflection of selfhood and in the creation of wider societal meanings, Cwynar reflects the spirit of pioneering creative and brand namesake Paul Poiret.

Ruinart’s Carte Blanche featuring Andrea Bowers

For this year’s Carte Blanche program, Ruinart has invited six artists from around the world to engage in a creative dialogue titled Conversations with Nature, inspired by Ruinart’s commitment to sustainability. At Frieze New York, Ruinart will display two artworks by Andrea Bowers, a Californian artist renowned for her dedication to climate justice. The centerpiece, Chandeliers of Interconnectedness, pays homage to ecofeminist pioneer Françoise d’Eaubonne, while Political Ribbons feature slogans that ignite discourse around our climate crisis. Visitors can take home one of Bowers’ ribbons while enjoying a glass of champagne at the Ruinart Art Lounge.
